Highlights
Begin your cycling adventure in Rome, Italy's magnificent capital. You'll pedal along the ancient Appian Way through the serene Roman countryside, where vineyards, olive groves, and stunning medieval landscapes await. As you continue south, the Mediterranean reveals itself: discover the historic town of Terracina with its impressive waterfront and the enchanting seaside village of Sperlonga.
- Rome and the Via Appia Antica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2024
- The medieval village of Sermoneta with its spectacular views
- The white beaches and crystal-clear waters of Sperlonga
What awaits you
A bike tour with a 15-kilometer cycle ride along the Via Appia Antica, part of which is on dirt roads, and the rest on secondary roads that are almost always asphalted with little traffic. There is also a 5-kilometer stretch on a busy road.
1. Arrival in Rome
Welcome to Rome, the capital of Italy! Even if you’ve been here before, why not take some time to explore on foot? There’s always something new to see, experience and taste here.
2. Cycle on the ancient Appian Way to Lanuvio, the city of tasty wines
Are you ready to set off? Hand over your bikes and let’s go, pedalling through Italy’s most famous open-air museum: Regina Viarum, or Via Appia. You’ll be surrounded by famous monuments and the remains of ancient Roman villas for a good 16 km, so you’ll have plenty to take in. Then head to the southern border of the Castelli Romani park, also known as the Garden of Rome, where you can savour its delicious food and wine. The final stop is in Lanuvio, a town with a rich tradition of DOC wines. Cheers!
3. The "Garden of Rome" and the village of Sermoneta
Today’s route may have some gentle undulations, but it is truly beautiful, featuring vineyards, kiwi orchards, and lush countryside. Along the way, you will cross the Via Francigena. We recommend visiting the stunning Ninfa Garden (be sure to book tickets in advance) and the Abbey of Valvisciolo. Finally, you arrive in Sermoneta, one of the most charming medieval villages in the province of Latina.
4. Towards the sea, passing farms famous for mozzarella cheese
Cycle down to the sea and cross the Pontine Plain. This area has been reclaimed since the 1920s and is now a fertile agricultural region known as the vegetable garden of Rome. It is famous for its buffalo mozzarella. Along the way, you can see farms with herds grazing and maybe even taste some fresh mozzarella. Today, you are heading to Terracina, a beautiful place in the Agro Pontino. It is said that the sorceress Circe once roamed here. After a bit more effort, you can reach the viewpoint at the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo and the Temple of Jupiter Anxur. From there, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Gulf of Gaeta.
5. A short cycling stage through ancient roads to the sea in Sperlonga
Today’s stage is relatively short, so we recommend taking advantage of the sea for a refreshing swim. As you leave Terracina, you will cross another section of the Via Appia before reaching Sperlonga, known as the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.” This charming town is perched on a rocky spur between the Gulf of Circeo and the Gulf of Gaeta.
