Highlights
A journey of discovery in the ancient region of Tuscia: cycle from Rome into the nature and hills of this area to discover picturesque hilltop villages, enchanting lakes, such as Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe, and lots and lots of culture. You'll arrive in the beautiful Umbrian city of Orvieto, but first you'll be enchanted by Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the region's most amazing villages.
- The ancient region of Tuscia with its natural and cultural treasures.
- The enchanting volcanic lakes: Vico and Bolsena
- The view from afar of Civita di Bagnoregio
What awaits you
The tour is somewhat challenging, with varying stage lengths. Reaching the perched villages requires some climbing, but the effort is worthwhile. We recommend using an electric bike to explore the area comfortably.
1 Individual arrival in Rome
Rome is a city where there’s always something new to discover, even if you’ve visited before. Spend a few hours wandering through its many neighborhoods, each with its unique charm, ready to make you fall in love.
2. Along the Tiber River in the Roman countryside
After a short briefing and bike drop-off, you will leave Rome following the bike path along the Tiber River. If you need a pick-me-up, don’t forget to try the typical (and very tasty) maritozzo with cream! Say goodbye to the capital and head for the countryside to reach the first stop of the tour in the small town of Campagnano.
3. The village of Calcata, the waterfalls of Monte Gelato and arrival in Sutri
The first stop of the day is the famous medieval village of Calcata. The village is suspended in time and space above the Valle del Treja Regional Park. The surprises don’t stop today, as you continue to the Monte Gelato waterfalls along the Treja River, to cool off a bit before arriving at Sutri, one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscia. One of the main attractions here is the archaeological park, so be sure to take your time to explore it.
4. From Sutri to Vejano to Lake Vico: dive time
As you say goodbye to Sutri, you will cycle along roads lined with hazel trees toward the village of Vejano, which is worth a stop. The hills will lead you to Lake Vico, a lake of volcanic origin that lies about 500 meters above sea level. The lake is swimmable, so if the weather permits… you deserve a dip!
5. From Lake Vico to Soriano del Cimino and Viterbo, the city of the Popes
The beech forest of Monte Fogliano guides you toward the village of Soriano del Cimino, which, although small, boasts a real castle: the Orsini Castle! Your journey concludes in Viterbo, the city of the popes. The heart of Viterbo is Piazza San Lorenzo, where the most important palaces of the city stand facing each other. Enjoy the evening and explore the city!
6. From Viterbo to the ancient village of Marta and Lake Bolsena
Leave Viterbo to reach the second highlight of this tour: Lake Bolsena. It is the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe and you will have the opportunity to circumnavigate it, encountering beautiful villages such as Marta: an ancient fishing village, ideal for a short stop. Then we continue to Bolsena, which, besides giving its name to the lake, is also a beautiful town.
7. From Bolsena to Civita di Bagnoregio and the enchanting Orvieto
Last day of pedaling! After crossing the hills that crown the lake, you reach one of the most enchanting places in Tuscia: Civita di Bagnoregio, known as the “dying city”. The beauty of this town withstands the test of time, despite the erosion of the tuff cliff on which it is built. You can access it via a suspension bridge, and it is surrounded by the Valle dei Calanchi, a stunning landscape shaped by wind and rain erosion. Finally, you will reach Orvieto, one of the most magical cities in Umbria—an experience waiting to be discovered!
